At a time when attention spans are short and clickbait headlines dominate the newsfeed, the long form is becoming an invaluable way of informing, provocating and challenging readers. Therefore, the University of Sydney offers various literary prizes for undergraduate student submissions across different topics – all work must be anonymous and submitted under pseudonym.
Winners receive a $500 honorarium and certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Additionally, their piece can be featured in the Sidney Prize Archive and their victory announced on the second Wednesday of every month. Anyone may nominate a piece for consideration by the last day of every month; winners are announced on the second Wednesday.
This award, named in memory of Sidney Hillman who passed away, recognizes journalists and public figures whose work emphasizes social justice and strives for peace with justice. Previous recipients have included Julian Burnside, Noam Chomsky and Mary Robinson – just three names among many.
The University of Sydney has won four highly esteemed Eureka Prizes – Australia’s “Science Oscars”. Dr Mengyu Li from the School of Physics, Professor Kate Jolliffe from Chemistry and Peter Banks’ Sensory Conservation Team from Life and Environmental Sciences were among this year’s recipients of these coveted awards.
Award given to an advanced graduate student or recent PhD for an unpublished article that significantly advances both their field and Christian history in general. Essay will be published by Church History.
Overland magazine presents The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize biannually as an award in global literature and culture. For 2023’s prize, judges Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh selected a shortlist of over 500 entries before selecting three finalists as winners and runners-up to be published by Overland magazine.
If your entry represents or draws upon experiences and identities that have been historically marginalised or vulnerable, are you part of their community or experience? While this question is optional, we strongly urge you to carefully consider and answer. Your response will only be seen by our internal editors, unless our judges request it after considering your piece. Subscribing to Overland gives you one year (four issues) at the subscriber rate and eligibility to enter the Neilma Sidney Prize; submissions from both established and emerging writers are welcomed, and must feature original short fiction that loosely explores travel themes (please refer to full terms and conditions for more details).
