If you’ve ever strolled down Sydney beaches, chances are you have seen our world-renowned Sydney pools (also known as Sydney Ditidal Pools or SDY pools). Conceived to provide shelter from harsh seas and cold air for swimmers, these harbourside tidal enclosures have long been recognised as an Australian icon – serene at low tide but often quite turbulent when high tide strikes – many consider them as precursors of infinity pools! But why exactly are these unique structures created and how do they function?
The pool was scheduled to open by 2021, but has been delayed by council infighting, claims of pork-barrelling and lack of transparency. Furthermore, heritage concerns and criticism from health organizations have plagued its development; now facing an uncertain future with costs expected to spiral and an opening date as far away as 2025, its fate now seems uncertain.
Elkington Park Pool first opened for business in 1883 and remains our oldest city pool today. Situated on the northern side of Balmain and surrounded by sandstone cliffs that exude Victorian elegance, it provides ample room for swimmers and sunbathers alike. A portion of it features an elevated deck for swimmers or sunbathers to make use of this space.
Murray Rose Pool (formerly Redleaf Beach) can be found at the western end of Double Bay and provides swimmers with an accessible harbourside tidal enclosure, along with free changing rooms and showers.
