Hong Kong offers various awards for writing and other activities. Of particular note is the HK Prize, which recognizes writers who explore Hong Kong culture and history through written works. Winners receive a monetary prize, plaque at an awards ceremony, as well as F&B perks – however competition for these awards can be fierce; only select few finalists may even win an award; nonetheless it may be worthwhile giving it a go if you possess both skills and dedication!
The Hong Kong Prize celebrates those who have done extraordinary things, leaving an impactful mark in Hong Kong and Asia. As one of Asia’s premier prizes, thousands apply and top media coverage ensures its prestige; some finalists even risked their lives for their work! Some notable accomplishments of winners include founding an organization providing shelter to homeless adults or developing liquid biopsy technologies.
Wanting to win the HK Prize requires submitting their work before its submission deadline. After submission, judges will evaluate and shortlist 20 works for exhibition. The winner will receive both a cash prize of HK$8,000 as well as a grant for their school of up to HK$20k. Judging criteria includes quality of artwork; its storytelling; message conveyed; artistic skill used to express theme.
Designed to recognize outstanding researchers, the Hong Kong Prize also encourages young scholars to pursue their passion in science. Furthermore, this international prize draws attention to Hong Kong as an extraordinary hub of research and development; applicants must submit an article that pertains directly to Hong Kong with positive societal implications.
The HK Prize is open to students throughout Hong Kong. In order to participate, nominated teachers must nominate them; nominees then have up to three pieces of art they may submit before the submission deadline; shortlisted artists will have an auction after their exhibition and proceeds from that sale will benefit Justice Centre’s work with forced migrants.
Students enrolled in secondary schools in Hong Kong can compete for the HK Prize. Judges will assess each work according to its technical skill, composition and execution as well as how it reflects on its annual theme and promotes diversity and inclusion.
As well as receiving a monetary prize, winners will also be honored at an awards ceremony attended by various guests and receive certificates and commemorative HK$1,000 book coupons as part of their prizes.
