Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) established the Hong Kong Prize to recognize diversity, equity and inclusion. This year’s competition attracted record entry numbers and 30 shortlisted works. At its gala on May 17th, Pakistani artist Sameen Agha took home the Grand Prize with her red marble sculpture “Home is a Terrible Place to Love.” Noormah Jamal from Pakistan also made the shortlist with her acrylic-on-canvas painting “Did the Seed Grow?,” depicting two women with potted plants between them.
Hong Kong artists were well represented at this year’s hk prize, with nine making the shortlist and nearly two-thirds being female artists – a first in prize history! All works from these nine artists were auctioned off during an event hosted by SAF Charity Initiatives which aim to empower children from disadvantaged backgrounds express themselves creatively through art. All proceeds were then given directly back to SAF charity projects dedicated to helping these initiatives flourish.
Apart from the main prize, four supplementary awards will also be presented to runners who complete specific distances within the full marathon race. Winners for these supplementary prizes will be announced later.
