Baccarat – The Game With a Superstitious History

Baccarat is an enjoyable casino game with a fascinating history. While popularly associated with James Bond, its roots can be traced all the way back to ancient China where its predecessor game pai gow first originated. Marco Polo brought this variant over to Italy during his 13th-century travels where it quickly became a favorite among nobility and wealthy of nearby France (where it was known as Chemin de Fer or Chemmy).

Bettors wager on either the banker or player hand, with bettors placing bets based on which hand comes closest to 9. Two cards are then distributed for each hand – their values added up and then the one with the highest total won. Only rightmost digit is counted; thus if both cards total nine but one of them contains sevens or nines in it will still count for six points rather than nine points each as in previous games. A commission is payable if bettors choose the banker hand as their prize.

Though the rules of blackjack are straightforward, players and dealers must memorize a special set of regulations known as a tableaux in order to play correctly. For instance, bettors on banker must remember when drawing is necessary if player’s first two cards total 4, 5, 6 or 7. Bankers also need to know when to stand; typically when player’s first two cards total 8-9 they’ll stand instead of drawing; otherwise they’ll draw with any second two card totaling either 4 or 5 as it stands instead of drawing with 4 or 5.

Although it may be tempting to dismiss such beliefs as superstitions, many Asian gamblers utilize numerological preferences when placing bets. According to former Nevada Gaming Control Agent and casino dealer Bill Zender (who literally wrote the book on managing casino games), Asian high rollers have increasingly chosen baccarat over time as their game of choice.

Casinos across the country have seen the number and stakes of baccarat tables increase rapidly in recent years, creating highly volatile games for smaller operators without access to mass and VIP play that can mitigate volatility.

Casino management can minimize this risk by strategically selecting which tables to open for each game and what limits to provide. Furthermore, players can reduce how much money they lose by employing strategies like the 1-3-2-6 System which manages bets and potential winnings (e.g. starting off with one $10 bet (1 unit) before increasing it after winning round 1 by two units if successful – this method allows them to win big amounts while keeping risk low). But remember – gamble responsibly! When gambling remember not to drink and drive!
