The Inaugural Hong Kong Prize Forum

The Hong Kong Prize offers the public an opportunity to show their support for winners. By engaging the public in selecting winners, this competition provides them with a deeper understanding of science, technology and achievements of its finalists as well as building teamwork and communication skills through participation. Furthermore, it supports Hongkong Prize’s mission by encouraging young scientists striving for excellence while making contributions both locally and globally.

From 13-18 November 2023, the inaugural Hong Kong Laureate Forum took place. Around 200 young scientists from all around the globe and Shaw Laureates shared their ideas, experience, and aspirations during an intensive week of top-class intellectual seminars, discussion groups, poster sessions, visits to latest scientific development projects in Hong Kong as well as cross-cultural social activities.

Miss Kong Yip from Hong Kong received a special award in recognition of her impressive sailing accomplishments. She became the first Hong Konger ever to win gold medal in an Olympic sailing event (women’s 470 class at Rio 2016), inspiring people around the globe to believe that nothing is impossible and take on challenging situations head on.

Another highlight of the evening was a Fireside Chat moderated by Mr Adriel CHAN, Vice Chairperson of Hang Lung Properties. Dr Owen H. KO (2004 HLMA Winner and Assistant Dean for Research of Faculty of Medicine of Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Ms Ewina PUN (2012) (2012 HLMA Winner and Doctoral Candidate at Brown University) shared their research journeys and provided unique insight into transformative power of mathematics including its effects in neurobiology and neural engineering.

At this year’s awards ceremonies, the Hong Kong Phil extends our congratulations and thanks to all finalists and winners on their outstanding accomplishments. In particular, we thank all our supporters and donors, especially Hong Kong SAR Government and Principal Patron Swire Group who provided so much assistance that helped the HK Phil’s work flourish and win this prestigious prize.
